Rockmount - 2 Monaghan Utd - 0: FAI Intermediate Cup champions Rockmount qualified for the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup at Rockmount Park yesterday for only the second time in their history.

Two second-half goals from centre forward Michael Deasy gave the Munster Senior League side their passage and it was a case of history repeating itself as Rockmount in 1987 defeated the same opposition by 3-1 at Belgium Park in Monaghan before losing out to Dundalk in the quarter-finals.

Rockmount, without their team captain Pat Oldham because of a knee injury and with team manager Billy Cronin on holiday in Florida, had the better of the first half as the teams went in 0-0 at half-time. However, Rockmount took the lead on the hour after Shane Jackson brought down Ken Howey and Deasy sent Vladimir Munteanu the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Monaghan's Stuart Holt twice went close to an equaliser from free-kicks, but on each occasion Derek Slattery saved. But Deasy made the game safe six minutes from time with a fine volley.
