Real Madrid sounded an ominous warning to their Champions League rivals, blitzing Belgian rivals Anderlecht 4-1.

First-half goals from Fernando Morientes, Luis Figo and Ivan Helguera set up the win, which leaves Real Madrid firmly in the Group D driving seat with the maximum six points from two matches.

Morientes was the first to get on the scoresheet, trapping a clipped pass from team-mate Ivan Helguera before magically wrong-footing his marker with some lovely control and rifling home on 12 minutes.

Figo and Steve McManaman were particularly menacing, swapping flanks and tormenting the Anderlecht defence.

In Lyon, Sonny Anderson fired in two goals in the home side's 3-0 thrashing of Spartak Moscow. Steve Marlet opened the scoring on two minutes, then Anderson netted on 31 and 42 minutes to give Lyon hope of qualifying for the quarter-finals.
