As the statistics show - 13-0 from their three wins - Pembroke Wanderers have made an irrepressible and impregnable start to the Leinster Senior League as they aim to recapture the title from Glenanne.

Duncan McKeen returned (after bringing in the harvest) to fortify the defence in the defeat of Avoca at Serpentine Avenue on Saturday while the attackers, spearheaded by Justin Sherriff, played extravagantly and were foiled of scoring more than five goals by the visitors' sharpest performers, Charlie Batt (until he was injured) and Robert Hanna. Avoca need to have more faith in themselves.

Glenanne meanwhile have not got firing on all cylinders. They coped with Trinity's opening appearance in winning 4-3 at Santry, but a couple of Korean-style goals by Graham Shaw were needed to establish the champions' authority, even if Johnny Harte reduced the margin to the minimum. Also, a full-stretch save by Ian Clarke prevented Charlie Carroll from making it 33 at an earlier stage. The students are going to be a threat to the league's other developing sides, notably Three Rock Rovers.

Rovers - who may not relish next Saturday's visit to Pembroke - went two up through Colin Huet and Phelie Maguire against YMCA at Grange Road but Michael Fry and company almost salvaged a point as the home team hung on, 2-1. There was a similar pattern at Rathdown, where Alan Lewis and Ian Allen scored for Monkstown with Colin Stewart being allowed only one reply for Corinthians.
