Born in Birmingham, a cousin of Nicholas Roche, Martin will ride his third Olympics for Ireland, his 13th place in Rio equalling Ireland's best ever finish in the men's Olympic road race – Ciaran Power also finished 13th in Athens in 2004. Now a stage winner in all three Grand Tours after a victory in the Giro earlier this year, the 244km mountainous course that takes in the lower slopes of Mount Fuji, climbing a total of 4,865m, should be to his liking. A winner of two Monuments of cycling, Liege- Bastogne-Liege and Il Lombardia, he was fourth in the Veulta a Espana last year.
