Tokyo 2020 Day 11: Irish in action and best of the rest

Kellie Harrington can guarantee a bronze medal in the early hours of Tuesday morning

Kellie Harrington will be the headline Irish act on Day 11 in Tokyo as she takes on Imane Khelif of Algeria with a guaranteed bronze medal in the lightweight division up for grabs for the winner. Harrington came through her opening round with ease and is widely tipped to be Ireland’s best boxing medal hope. As it is she’s now the last chance at adding a second medal for the boxers after Kurt Walker was eliminated on Sunday and Aidan Walsh had to withdraw with injury.

Before that, the action gets underway on the track with Andrew Coscoran in the heats for the 1,500m at 1.27am. At 2.17am Phil Healy will attempt to reach the semi-finals of the women’s 400m after she missed out in the 200m on Monday. At 3.45am then it’s the turn of Marcus Lawler in the men’s 200m heats and he will be followed in the same event by Leon Reid at 3.53am. Should they get through they will both run in the semi-finals later in the morning.

In the equestrian stadium, Bertram Allen, Cian O’Connor and Darragh Kenny will get their Olympic campaigns underway with qualifying for the individual jumping.

The women’s golf gets underway late on Tuesday night and runs through Wednesday morning with Leona Maguire out at 11.52pm followed by Stephanie Meadow at 2.47am.
