Ireland’s first Olympic diving representative since Dubliner Eddie Heron competed in London in 1948, Dingley actually came very close to representing Britain there four years ago, only to be overlooked in the final selection. That partly influenced his decision to declare for Ireland, his grandmother born and raised in Spike Island in Cork. He moved to Dublin to live and train full-time, his reward coming at the Olympic qualifying event in Rio earlier this year, his 11th place finish leading to the return trip for the actual games with the prospect of making the final.
