Monkstown capture Irish Senior Cup for first time in almost a century

What a week it has been for Monkstown. The south Dublin side won the Leinster Senior Cup last week and yesterday added the Irish Senior Cup, their first winning of the trophy in 99 years when they beat Queen’s University 1-0 in 1914.

In a match that swung for its entirety, man of the match and set-piece specialist Andy Ewington finally settled it in Monkstown's favour in the final play of extra time from a short corner drag flick.

It was a cracking final, one Monkstown might have tidied up in normal time but for a fabulous save by Pembroke goalkeeper Mark Ingram.

Monkstown's Davy Carson opened the scoring by tipping in a cross after eight minutes.

Ewington added to that from a corner on 14 minutes before Pembroke striker Alan Sothern struck his 41st goal of the seasonand then equalised just before half time.

Ewington put Monkstown ahead again on 50 minutes before Sothern levelled again.

In extra time Ward was again in for Monkstown but almost immediately Ronan Flannery replied for Pembroke.

Finally a short corner was awarded to Monkstown with nothing left on the clock.

Ewington duly delivered for 5-4, the oldest trophy in hockey making its way to the Dún Laoghaire borough for the first time in almost a century.
