Men’s hockey: Monkstown intent to stay at the top

Monkstown, who opened their synthetic pitch at their base in Rathdown School, Dún Laoghaire, in recent weeks, are looking towards the next phase of the EY National Hockey League with enthusiasm.

Settled at the top of the table after six games, a point ahead of Ulster’s Lisnagarvey, Monkstown have their sights set on remaining at the top when the tournament continues next week after a break of three weeks.

The south Dublin side have not lost a match yet in the competition, and have drawn just once against Three Rock Rovers.

With Johnny Caren, who is also assistant coach to the Irish men, in charge for this season, the sights of the club are set on European fare.

Last time out Monkstown beat Cookstown 6-1, their highest tally of goals this season. They also know that they have already taken the scalp of Lisnagarvey, who they beat 5-2 in Hillsborough in the second round of matches.

While there is a long way for the competition to run, there are a crucial three rounds to be played before Christmas before a break until February 6th.

With two home games against eighth placed Glenanne and third placed Banbridge and a final away match on December 19th against bottom-placed Annadale, Monkstown’s ambitions are to go into the new year at the top of the table.
