Conor McGregor issued with potential six month medical suspension

Conor McGregor may not fight again this year after receiving a six-month medical suspension following Saturday's UFC 202 win over Nate Diaz.

Unless the 28-year-old is given clearance from an orthopaedic doctor beforehand - injuries to his left foot and ankle will rule the featherweight champion out of action for the remainder of the year, according to reports.

Diaz meanwhile - he is sideline for 30 days after suffering multiple face lacerations and bruising. The duo are among 13 fighters given medical suspensions following the weekend’s event in Las Vegas (as revealed by MMA Junkie).

Following the fight McGregor dismissed any notion that he had suffered a serious injury - saying that he had left the venue on crutches because of pain in his left shin. The result of the many leg kicks he hit Diaz with during their gruelling five-round contest.

Plans for McGregor's next fight remain unknown - with UFC President Dana White saying before Saturday's win that regardless of the outcome the Irish fighter would next have to defend his featherweight belt in a rematch with José Aldo.

McGregor’s camp though have expressed a desire to challenge for Eddie Alvarez’s lightweight title. While both parties have confirmed that they are eager to complete a McGregor/Diaz trilogy with a third fight. This time at lightweight.

If he cannot obtain the required specialist clearance, McGregor will be prevented from beginning contact training until December 17th, and his next fight will not be until at least February 2017.

UFC 205 takes place on November 12th - the first UFC event hosted in New York City.
