Darren O’Neill admitted that he wasn’t up to scratch after Saturday’s quarter-final defeat to Jason Quigley at the Elite 2013 National Championships.

The Kilkenny southpaw, who captained the Irish boxing side at the London Olympics, was edged out on a countback by the European U-23 champion following a see-saw middleweight duel at Dublin’s National Stadium.

Quigley, who boxes out of the Finn Valley BC in Donegal, won the first round by a point and stretched his advantage to 9-7 by the end of the second.

O’Neill who beat Quigley in the 2010 and 2011 finals, took the third 6-4 to tie the bout at 13-13 at the final bell.

Quigley will now face Belfast’s Conrad Cummings in the last-four on Friday.
