O'Kelly sets tone at Clontarf

Clontarf's play-off prospects improved dramatically after this emphatic victory at Castle Avenue on Saturday

Clontarf's play-off prospects improved dramatically after this emphatic victory at Castle Avenue on Saturday. A high-scoring win over Buccaneers at Ballinasloe in next Sunday's re-arranged fixture would probably secure a top-four place.

And victories won't come any easier than this, with Young Munster, already relegated, offering little resistance throughout. They had some success in the lineouts with Paul O'Connell doing all that was asked of him.

Elsewhere, though, Clontarf dominated, their back row again dictating the play. But the accolades will go to front row Warren O'Kelly, whose penetrating run from midfield after four minutes set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

Having literally punched a hole in the Young Munster defence, flanker Declan Quinn took the ball to just under the posts. From second phase ball, centre Alan Reddan then released wing Ollie Winchester to score on the left.

Just before half-time Clontarf again made the line, with flanker Alan Dignam linking with centres Alan Reddan and James Downey to send the latter over. An 18-point lead at the break was more than enough.

The bonus point, their fifth of the campaign, came shortly after half-time with number eight Ben Gissing going over from a lineout.

Clontarf, having gone 161 minutes without conceding a score at home, finally had their line breached with Clem Casey and Finbar Hogan going over in the closing stages.
