New Zealanders finish sharply to earn victory

New Zealand claimed victory in the dying seconds to deny Leinster at Donnybrook last night.

Without a win on this tour prior to last night, the New Zealanders had their work cut out early on with Leinster showing no inhibitions inside their own half. With their two industrious centres, Kieran Lewis and Gary Brown, always looking for the gap it wasn't long before the home side took the lead.

Following Barry Lynn's early penalty, an opening try came on 10 minutes when James Norton's pace took him into the right-hand corner. Lynn converted and then landed his second penalty after Lewis was tackled high as he attempted to cut through.

But New Zealand showed it wasn't all one-sided when Duncan Bell took a pass from fellow centre Tim Manawatu to touch down on the right. Outhalf Noel Edmonds converted, after which Lynn and Edmonds traded penalties to take the score to 19-13 in Leinster's favour.

Leinster, however, then increased the margin before halftime. Full back Fiachra Baynes initiated the move in his own half before Alex Cahill set off on a run which took him to the New Zealand 22. Cahill managed to offload to flanker Tom Carter who took the ball at pace to score.

Lynn added the conversion to leave it 26-13 at the break but the Kiwis had a better time of things in the second half with Leinster not looking half as assured. And after spinning a ball just a few yards short of the home line, New Zealand then made amends when number eight Sione Kepu passed inside to second-row Lans Tibby who made the short dash to the line, Edmonds converting.

Then Bradley Taylor got the match-winning score under the posts with Edmonds landing the points to poach victory.
