SIGERSON CUP: DCU 0-17 Queen's 0-9Dublin City University advanced to the quarter-finals of the Sigerson Cup yesterday but they must plan for the remainder of the competition without Cork midfielder Aidan Walsh and Donegal goalkeeper Michael Boyle.
The pair fell foul of Higher Education GAA rules relating to eligibility and team manager Niall Moyna voiced his displeasure following yesterday's victory on home soil against Queen's University, Belfast.
There are suggestions a failed appeal to the independent Disputes Resolution Authority may have cost an estimated €10,000. But DCU had vowed to explore all avenues in an attempt to free the pair after they were deemed ineligible to compete in this year's competition by Comhairle Ardoideachais (CA).
Moyna fumed: "That man (Walsh) is going out to teach physical education and I certainly won't be encouraging him to promote Gaelic games, and I mean that. . . There are people who must spend all of their time thinking of ways for students not to play; if they would spend one tenth of their time figuring out how to get more people to play inter-collegiate football they would be serving their time much better."
Donegal's Michael Murphy was in sensational form for DCU, kicking nine points, including five magnificent efforts from play. The hosts led by a point at half-time, 0-7 to 0-6, but they took full advantage of the elements in the second half. Derry's James Kielt offered some resistance for Queen's but the champions were too strong.
