Mulholland gets Galway job

MANAGERIAL NEWS:ALAN MULHOLLAND last night became Galway's fourth manager in as many years when he was confirmed as the new boss of the Tribesmen.

The Salthill/Knocknacarra clubman, who guided Galway to the All-Ireland Under-21 crown this year when they defeated Cavan in the final, has been given a three-year term.

Galway officials are hoping that his appointment will restore some stability after the previous two managers – Joe Kernan and Tomás Ó Flátharta – lasted just a season each.

Mulholland, who also led Galway to the All-Ireland minor crown in 2007, will bring his under-21 selectors from this year – Tuam Stars manager Alan Flynn and Donal Ó Flátharta from An Spidéal – with him into the top job.

Meanwhile, Wexford football manager Jason Ryan will not interview for the position of hurling manager in his native Waterford.

It had been suggested that Ryan and former Kilkenny goalkeeper James McGarry, the current manager of Ballyhale Shamrocks, were being considered to succeed Davy Fitzgerald in 2012.

However, Ryan confirmed yesterday that he will seek reappointment with Wexford for a fifth season.

“I’m very proud of where I come from and it would be a brilliant opportunity, but there is unfinished business in Wexford,” said Ryan in reference to twice guiding Wexford to the Leinster final. “(The Waterford hurlers) would be a great job to get, but I haven’t interviewed for it. I’ll be speaking with the Wexford county board this week to sort out my future.”

The new Waterford hurling manager is expected to be announced next week.
