Ireland's Denis O'Sullivan brought the curtain down on the 2000 European Seniors Tour season in spectacular fashion when he closed with a seven under par 65 to win the inaugural Abu Dhabi Seniors Tour Championship.
It was O'Sullivan's second successive Tour triumph after his maiden win at the Dan Technology Seniors Tournament of Champions at the Buckinghamshire last week and the £34,606 first prize lifts him to third place on the Tours money list with £91,259.
O'Sullivan (52), a former Irish amateur strokeplay and match play champion from Cork, started the final round four shots adrift of overnight leader, Jeff Van Wagenen, and he fell further behind with a bogey on the first hole but nine birdies in the next 17 holes was enough to give him a one shot victory over Brazil's Priscillo Diniz, who gained some consolation because his second place finish, worth £23,068 was enough to confirm his position as the 2000 European Seniors Tour Rookie of the Year.
O'Sullivan's success in the desert brought Tommy Horton's four year reign as the European Seniors Tour number one to an end but the Englishman didn't relinquish his status without a fight. Needing to win to jump from third to first on the money list, he closed with a battling 68 that put him in third place two shots behind the winner.
At the end of a successful season comprising 20 tournaments a mere £953 separated the first two on the money list. The new number one is Australia's Noel Ratcliffe, who won both the Scotsman Scottish Seniors Open and the Temes Seniors Open in Greece, on his way to amassing £94,863 from 19 starts.
