Castletroy College 11 CBC Cork 13:Limerick's Castletroy College came within a few minutes of causing a huge upset in the Munster Schools Cup at Annacotty as they pushed CBC to the limit.
In what was a physical affair in very heavy conditions both sides had a player sent off after a melee in the first half involving most of the 30 players broke out. CBC also had a second player shown a yellow card.
It seemed that Castletroy would hold out for victory but their hopes were dashed when CBC replacement Cillian Monohan kicked a late penalty.
CBC had the benefit of the strong breeze in the first half and they went in front when fullback Chris McAuliffe swept in for a try converted by outhalf Tomás Quinlan.
That score spurred on Castletroy and they were rewarded when winger Rhys Joyce had a try. Outhalf Conor Linehan missed the conversion but followed up with a penalty which put the Limerick side 8-7 in front.
When Linehan put over a penalty six minutes into the second half the biggest upset for years became a distinct possibility. But CBC are traditional cup battlers and Quinlan landed a penalty to leave only a point between them and set up a grandstand finish.
CBC were awarded a penalty two minutes from time and Monohan held his nerve to grab the win.
