Paul McGrath is now likely to wait until after the weekend before deciding whether to resume his career with West Ham or the First Division club, Sheffield United. McGrath (37), was in London for talks with West Ham's manager, Harry Redknapp last Monday and the following day, he travelled north to consider an offer to join Sheffield.
West Ham are ready to offer the Irishman an opportunity of extending his career in the Premiership after his surprising release by Derby Co at the end of the season.
Like the London club, Sheffield are prepared to allow him to continue living in Manchester and at only an hour's remove from his home, that would have obvious attractions for the Republic of Ireland's most capped player.
"I've spoken with both clubs and it's now decision time," he said. "It's an important move for me and when I make it, I want to make sure it's the right one. That's why I'm not rushing into anything."
McGrath, who conceded last month that his record breaking Ireland career is now almost certainly finished, believes that he is capable of going on at club level, for at least another season.
The FAI's security staff was augmented yesterday with the appointment of Declan McCluskey, a former Garda Superintendent, as safety and compliance officer. McCluskey, who served as an assistant to the Garda Commissioner, in charge of the Dublin area between 1984 and 1987, will work in tandem with the association's chief security officer, Joe McGlue.
