Mayo secured their first win in the Connacht FBD League by defeating under-strength All-Ireland champions Galway at Clonbur yesterday. The game started in atrocious conditions and concluded in almost total darkness.
Galway led for a brief period in the first half when Declan Meehan edged them to an 0-5 to 0-4 advantage, but a goal by John Casey just before the break left the visitors 1-5 to 0-6 clear at the interval.
Galway goalkeeper Ollie Kelly saved Maurice Sheridan's penalty kick but in the subsequent scramble, Casey hammered the ball into the roof of the Galway net. Mayo dominated the second period and a further goal by Damien Quinn and points by Maurice Sheridan had the winners eight points clear before substitute Tommy Wilson had Galway's seventh point 10 minutes from the end.
