Jeff Maggert bounced back from a disappointing Masters to tie for the lead with Steve Flesch after the first round of the $2.5 million MCI Heritage Classic in South Carolina yesterday.

One stroke behind were compatriots Steve Pate, Scott Hoch and John Cook and Swede Per-Ulrik Johansson, of whom only Cook played in the afternoon during strong southerly winds.
