John Breen is planning another title surprise in Tijuana, Mexico tonight. The Belfast trainer has John Lowey in tip-top shape to prize the WBC super-bantamweight championship from Mexican Erik Morales.
Few give the 31-year-old Ulsterman a chance against the champion but Breen, who has trained five world champions, refuses to accept that Lowey will be outclassed.
"Morales is a good champion but we have our game plan and though the odds are stacked against John he has the courage and skill to out-box Morales," explained Breen.
One of his proudest moments came in another shock when Belfast's Noel Magee wrenched the Commonwealth light heavyweight title from former WBO number one-ranked challenger Garry Delaney, now campaigning at heavyweight.
Lowey, whose only defeat in 27 contests came against American Kennedy McKinney in a WBU title fight when Breen was absent from his corner, is in confident mood.
"John has trained me right up to this fight and has got me into great shape," he said.
Lowey's career was halted in 1991 when the British Board of Control suspended his licence after an alleged irregularity on a brain scan.
