Sport Digest/ BOXING: With the resounding thud of his head against the canvas, Roy Jones's stellar career may have come to an end on Saturday night.

Jones was knocked unconscious by the unheralded Jamaican Glen Johnson, who retained his IBF light heavyweight title with a relentless assault capped by a thunderous right hand in the ninth round at the new FedEx Forum in Memphis.

Once considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Jones looked uninspired as he had the fight totally taken to him by the journeyman.

"I am not the best," Johnson said. "I am just a guy who is willing to fight the best."

Johnson finished matters in the first minute of the ninth. He unleashed a hammer of an overhand right that had Jones crumpling on contact.

Johnson added a left hook, but did not need to as Jones was dropping to the floor.

There was no need for a count as Jones's eyes rolled back in his head and his eyelids closed.

Jones (35) remained on the canvas for several minutes. He was diagnosed with a concussion, and doctors recommended he go to the hospital.

TENNIS: US world number two Andy Roddick coasted to victory over Belarus teenager Alexander Skrypko in a dead reverse singles rubber in the Davis Cup semi-finals in South Carolina yesterday.

The 6-4, 6-2 triumph was just a footnote for Roddick and the Americans as they had already won the tie by taking a 3-0 lead on Saturday.

The US will travel to Spain, who beat France 3-1 in their semi-final in Alicante, to play in the Davis Cup final from December 3rd to 5th.

Greg Rusedski's deciding rubber defeat left Britain frozen out of the world elite for another year yesterday. Rusedski lost in straight sets to Austria's number two, Stefan Koubek, to seal a 3-2 win for the home side and a place in the Euro-African Zone.
