Kernan holds off on future decision

Joe Kernan may hold off until the new year before making a decision about his future as Armagh manager. The Crossmaglen native has had four distinguished seasons at the helm, winning three Ulster titles and the All-Ireland in 2002.

After defeat to Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final on September 4th, speculation began in earnest about the future of Kernan and several of his senior players - most notably captain Kieran McGeeney and Oisín McConville. "I haven't made any decision since the semi-final," said Kernan. "It could be January before I make a decision but it will be at least another three or four weeks before I sit down and think it through.

"We were devastated after the match (against Tyrone) but it is over now and part of history so there is noting that can be done."

In Limerick, meanwhile, Frank Doherty has become the latest name associated with replacing Liam Kearns as football manager. Doherty, who guided Caltra to an All-Ireland club title last year, has been confirmed by county board chairman Owen Hayes as one of five candidates to be interviewed for the role. "We expect to have interviews completed next week and the name of the successful candidate will be revealed at our October board meeting."

It is understood that Páidí Ó Sé is to be interviewed this weekend. Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, Ger Lawlor, John Kennedy and Mossie McCarthy, from the Drom-Broadford club, are also in the running.

John Landers, liaison officer for the Limerick senior hurling team, announced at this week's county board meeting that he would not be allowing his name to go forward at annual convention for county youth officer, a position he has held for a number of years.
