SOME hefty wagers were landed at the Curragh on Saturday afternoon, when Johan Cruyff took the Group Three Juddmonte Beresford Stakes for Aidan O'Brien and Christy Roche.
Backed from odds against to 1 to 2, the handsome son of Danehill went clear in the final furlong to confirm the good impression he had made when a close fifth to stablemate Desert King in the National Stakes.
Fourth earlier in the afternoon aboard Gay Kelleway's Anzio in a Listed sprint, Ray Cochrane looked like making his trip worthwhile when Sanoosea, trained by Michael Stoute, disputed the lead briefly in the closing stages of the Group Two Blandford Stakes with the John Oxx-trained Predappio.
But Predappio battled on the stronger to prevail by a neck and become Oxx's third winner of the Blandford Stakes in the past decade.
"He is a tough, improving horse who will stay in training next season," remarked Oxx's assistant trainer Jimmy O'Neill.
While Sansoosca (7-2) went down by a length to the 9 to 2 winner, Anzio never looked like taking a hand in the finish of the Waterford Testimonial Stakes as Pat Flynn's course specialist Ger's Royale took control in the hands of Michael Kinane, who was also successful on Mubadara and French Ballerina.
