BOTH Irish survivors in the British Amateur Championship at Turnberry crashed out in the third round yesterday. Leading qualifier Jody Fanagan, of Milltown, was beaten by Scotland international Roger Beames by 3 and 1 and Peter Lawrie, of UCD lost out by the same margin to England training squad member Warren Bladon.

Beames, of Wick was beaten by eventual victor Gordon Sherry in the final of this event at Royal Liverpool last year but he negotiated the British Open championship links in level par.

Lawrie, 22, put up a valiant challenge against his 30 year old opponent and it was not until the 11th hole that he slipped behind.
