GOLF: Sean McTernan from Co Sligo and City of Derry's David Jones figured prominently for the University of Toledo at the Gary Koch Invitational in Florida last week when the Rockets finished tied for eight place with Central Florida on a 36-holes score of 579.
Hosts Florida won the event with a score of 564 in a tournament reduced to 36 holes because of threatening weather conditions. McTernan tied for 10th place in the individual honours with a score of 141 (72, 69) while Jones had 148 after two rounds of 74 and a tie for 47th place.
McTernan tied for sixth at the Bruce Fossum-Spartan Invitational last season, tied for seventh place at the Alabama Invitational; finished ninth at the First Energy Intercollegiate and tied for second at the MAC Championships.
In the same event the University of Rhode Island team, with Kenneth Fahey and James Clarke, notched a 14th-place finish.
"Although I'm certainly disappointed with our numerical finish, I was pleased with the team's overall effort," said Rhode Island head coach Tom Drennan. "This was the most difficult field we've played in this season."
Leading the way for Rhode Island was Fahey, from Galway, who tied for 42nd place with a 147 (76, 71) while Belfast's James Clarke notched a 47th-place finish with a 148 (75, 73). Juniors Jason Lockwood (76, 76) and David Spitz (76, 76) tied for 59th place after shooting 152. Senior Michael Carbone had Rhode Island's other placing, 77th, with a 164 (82-82).
