Hungry Rovers rock Pembroke

Hockey Men's : Three Rock Rovers have again shown what a cup side they are

Hockey Men's: Three Rock Rovers have again shown what a cup side they are. While the Grange Road team have not been close to setting the pace in the Leinster Senior League, they pulled off the result of the weekend against Pembroke to win 3-1 on penalties after extra- time.

The win gives them a place in the quarter-finals of the Irish Senior Cup at home to Ulster club Mossley.

Rovers had the hungrier look of the sides, and although Pembroke sparkled with international players, the home team twice took the lead with goals from Peter Blakeney and Mitch Darling. Although Conor Harte and Ronan Gormley hit back both times to take the game into extra- time, Rovers held their nerve best.

The holders of the Cup, Cork Harlequins, also went through to meet Banbridge in the next round at the Ulster side's ground. Travelling to Garryduff for their match against rivals C of I, the sides were also inseparable after normal time with Harlequins Mark Black and C of I's Philip Smith hitting a goal to send the contest into extra-time. Again the game went to penalties, the visitors winning 5-4 to keep the defence of their title alive.

There were a lot of goals around, with Glenanne hitting seven against Belfast Harlequins. Internationals Graham Shaw and Stephen Butler hit a goal each, but the lion's share of the glory went to John Goulding, who netted four in the 6-1 win.

Glenanne are away to Cookstown in the next round after the Ulster side bagged nine goals against Bray up in Coolnafranky. Keith Black and Andy Barbour each scored a hat-trick for Cookstown in what was the biggest win of the weekend.

Banbridge hit seven against UCD to knock them out of the competition in a predictably one-way game. Ross McCandless collected a hat-trick for "The Ban" in the 7-1 win, with Michael O'Connor knocking in the students' only score.

Annadale and Lisnagarvey, who have been drawn to meet in the quarter-finals, won with varying degrees of ease. Annadale hit three against Railway Union at Park Avenue, and Lisnagarvey beat Hillsborough visitors Kilkeel 2-1.

The meeting between Annadale and Lisnagarvey will be the draw of the round, with all of the other sides happy enough that one of the two stronger teams left in the competition will be out of it by the semi-final stages.
