Henson joins Welsh fitness session

SARACENS’ GAVIN Henson has trained with Wales after having played 80 minutes of rugby in the past 21 months. Henson was among 40 players put through fitness sessions by Wales’s new strength and conditioning coach, Adam Beard.

Beard’s fitness findings will go some way to determining whether Henson, who has not played international rugby since March 2009, will be in Wales’s Six Nations squad.

A mutiny almost broke out at the start of the season when the Welsh Rugby Union used Henson, who was then on sabbatical, as the face of its new kit. Jamie Roberts, who has made the No12 jersey his own in Henson’s absence, made a remark on his Twitter page but it was quickly taken down.

Wales’ Six Nations squad is expected to be announced on Sunday, 16th January.

Sale Sharks scrumhalf Dwayne Peel and London Wasps number eight Andy Powell were also among those called for an assessment which includes speed drills, strength tests, sprints and conditioning trials including the monitoring of body fat percentage.

Elsewhere, Rugby Football Union chief executive John Steele is tomorrow expected to recommend significant changes to the structure of the organisation.

Steele launched a comprehensive review of the RFU, from grass-roots to governance, when he replaced Francis Baron in charge at Twickenham four months ago.

The former UK Sport boss set out to strengthen the management of the RFU in preparation for hosting the 2015 Rugby World Cup and he will present his plans to the management board tomorrow.

Steele’s recommendations will not impact on Martin Johnson and the England coaching team but an RFU spokesman said that “tough decisions” have been taken at executive level. Rob Andrew’s position as England’s elite rugby director is one of those to have come under the microscope. It is likely his role will be redefined.
