UCD 1-9 Meath 0-10:SÉAMUS McENANEY'S reign as Meath manager got off to a losing start at Páirc Tailteann last night with UCD spoiling the Monaghan man's debut with the Royals.
A dramatic stoppage-time goal by corner back Josh Hayes snatched the win for UCD after Shane McAnarney had pointed to give Meath the lead on 59 minutes. Meath began with just three of the starting 15 from last July’s controversial Leinster final win while UCD suffered an early setback when Kildare’s current All Star Peter Kelly was stretchered off after just three minutes.
It took UCD 24 minutes to before John Heslin landed their opening score via a free. Meath had three points on the board at the stage and could have been further head before UCD rallied to lead by 0-5 to 0-4 at the break.
There was little between the sides in the second half before Hayes sent UCD through to meet Carlow next Sunday. The winning score was secured after Brendan Murphy had done well to parry Ciarán Lyng’s initial attempt.
