West Ham 0 Oldham 1: The problems continued to pile up for West Ham manager Glenn Roeder as his side, now without a home win in seven matches this season, were dumped out of the League Cup by Second Division promotion-chasers Oldham.
The defensive frailties which have bedevilled West Ham at Upton Park all season let them down again as Oldham striker Carlo Corazzin stole in for the decisive header in the 41st minute.
Ipswich 3 Middlesbrough 1: Middlesbrough were comprehensively outclassed by First Division strugglers Ipswich last night. Joe Royle's team never looked back after taking a second-minute lead through Thomas Gaardsoe at Portman Road. Further goals from Jamie Clapham and Darren Bent sealed the tie. Franck Queudrue pulled one back for Middlesbrough.
Liverpool 3 Southampton 1: The strength in depth of Gerard Houllier's squad was ruthlessly emphasised as Southampton were imperiously brushed aside by what was virtually a Liverpool reserve. Goals from Patrik Berger, El-Hadji Diouf and Milan Baros settled the tie in a much better second half for Liverpool, but only after Ecuador international Agustin Delgado had caused some jitters by equalising.
Newcastle 3 Everton 3 (Everton win 3-2 on penalties) Two goals from Kieron Dyer and an Alessandro Pistone own goal for Newcastle and goals from Kevin Campbell, Steve Watson and David Unsworth for Everton brought the game to a penalty shoot-out which the Blues eventually won.
Blackburn 2 Walsall 2 (Blackburn win 5-4 on penalties) These two also went to penalties after extra-time failed to separate them with the holders going through 5-4 on penalties after a titanic struggle.
