CZECH REP 0, GREECE 0: European champions Greece held the Czech Republic to a scoreless draw with a typically stubborn defensive display that helped them to the European title in Portugal last month.
The Czechs, eliminated by Greece in the Euro 2004 semi-finals, dominated the match but just like in Portugal were unable to break down the resolute Greek defence.
The Czechs had two good opportunities to score but midfielder Tomas Rosicky wasted a chance in the 42nd minute, missing a cross from captain Karel Poborsky before Stepan Vachousek hit the crossbar early in the second half.
ICELAND 2, ITALY 0: Marcello Lippi's stint as Italy manager got off to the worst of starts with a humiliating defeat to Iceland.
The Italians were silenced by two goals in two minutes before 20 minutes of the game had elapsed. The first came from Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen after 17 and the second, which left the Italians completely shell-shocked, came from the boot of Gylfi Einarsson of Norwegian club Lillestrom SK on 19 minutes.
SCOTLAND 0, HUNGARY 3: Scotland slumped to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Lothar Matthaus's Hungary to extend a streak of winless Hampden Park friendlies which dates back to 1996.
Szabolcs Huszti netted the first two, including a penalty, and the third was a bizarre own-goal combination between Steven Pressley and debutant goalkeeper teenager David Marshall.
SWEDEN 2, HOLLAND 2: Marco van Basten's reign as Dutch coach began with a creditable draw against Sweden.
The home side took the lead after only four minutes when Mattias Jonson fired past goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from inside the box after being set up by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The Dutch equalised when Wesley Sneijder scored in the 17th minute and they went ahead on 43 when Sneijder produced a volley that goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson deflected, only for Mark Van Bommel to head home the rebound. Ibrahimovic equalised for the Swedes with a low volley after a 69th-minute corner.
LATVIA 0, WALES 2: John Hartson and Craig Bellamy scored in the last 10 minutes to give Wales victory over Latvia.
Wales rode their luck - their woodwork was struck twice - but defended well against a quick and forceful side before striking with deadly finishing late on.
In the 81st minute Gareth Roberts was fouled and Jason Koumas' free-kick was headed into the bottom corner by Hartson. And a minute from time the win was sealed when Bellamy was put through by Roberts, and he slid a shot into the far corner.
AUSTRIA 1, GERMANY 3: Juergen Klinsmann got off to the perfect start as Germany's new coach, presiding over a 3-1 win over neighbours Austria.
Kevin Kuranyi struck a morale-boosting hat-trick for the Germans, who were dumped out of the group stages of Euro 2004. The striker hit his first after just two minutes, a goal which was cancelled out after 10 by Martin Amerhauser.
Kuranyi was irresistible in the second half, pouncing again in the 61st minute before wrapping the game up 12 minutes later.
