South Africa's Amanda Coetzer knocked Steffi Graf out of the German women's Open in Berlin yesterday, trouncing the top seed 6-0, 6-1 in the quarter-finals.

The German had not played in a tournament since being forced to pull out of the Tokyo Pan Pacific Open with a knee injury a week after that Melbourne defeat.

Sixteen-year-old Martina Hingis of Switzerland, due to play Graf in that Tokyo final, has since taken over the world number one ranking.
