Veteran Derry forward Enda Gormley yesterday made a strong bid for selection for his county as they prepare to take on Galway in the All-Ireland football semi-final. Gormley gave a cracking display, scoring eight points against his county colleagues as Derry were given a stiff examination by an Ulster selection in a friendly at Pomeroy, Co Tyrone yesterday.
In the end the provincial titleholders ran out 10-point winners of a game which marked the official opening of Pomeroy Plunketts' new facilities. The Ulster champions fielded virtually a full-strength side against an Ulster selection made up mostly of Tyrone and fringe Derry players.
Seamus Downey, with a goal and three points, and Joe Cassidy, who scored four points, looked sharp and hungry for the Derry team, and Anthony Tohill kicked a handful of long-range scores.
But the Derry management may ponder longest on the form of Gormley, who recently returned from retirement. He was in deadly form from frees and play. It was a Seamus Downey goal which helped Derry to a 1-6 to 0-6 interval lead, and they eased comfortably ahead after Benny Murray drilled home a second goal five minutes into the second half.
Stephen McLarnon pulled a goal back for Ulster, before Gary Coleman slotted home a Derry penalty in the closing stages.
