Scott keen to extend world number one status

Adam Scott will attempt to extend his tenure as world number one after adding this week's Crowne Plaza Invitational to his schedule.

After passing up numerous opportunities, Scott finally replaced the injured Tiger Woods at the top of the rankings on Monday, despite sitting out the Byron Nelson Championship.

But the former US Masters champion could be overhauled by Henrik Stenson or Matt Kuchar if he does not play well enough at Colonial in Fort Worth, Texas.

If Scott misses the cut, world number three Stenson would just need to finish inside the top 30 in the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

If the pair’s finishing positions were similar, Stenson would need to be approximately three places higher than the Australian. Kuchar simply needs to win at Colonial to take top spot.

Scott would not be the only player to find his first spell as number one lasted just one week. That fate befell Tom Lehman, Fred Couple and Ernie Els, with former Open champion Lehman alone in never regaining top spot.

A different kind of history could also be made this week, with American Boo Weekley attempting to become the only player other than Ben Hogan to win consecutive titles at Colonial. Weekley believes he is in much better form than 12 months ago.
