China's Li Haotong faces the wrath of his mother after she waded into a pond at Le Golf National to retrieve his putter – only to find it had been snapped in half.

Li threw his putter into the water surrounding the 11th green after making a bogey on the par three during the first round of the HNA Open de France on Thursday.

Around 20 minutes later, the 21-year-old’s mother was then pictured wading knee-deep into the water to collect the club, which she appeared surprised to find was no longer in one piece.

That was much to the amusement of Tyrrell Hatton, Thomas Pieters and Alex Noren, who were two groups behind Li and playing the 11th hole at the time.
