Patrick Reed books Ryder Cup spot after Barclays win

Rickie Fowler depending on wildcard pick after meltdown

Patrick Reed clinched a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team when he won The Barclays on Sunday but Rickie Fowler missed out on automatic selection after a late meltdown.

Reed arrived in New York occupying eighth position on the points list for the biennial matches against Europe and booked his place with victory at Bethpage Black.

Fowler did not fare as well. He needed to finish third or better to secure his position after starting the tournament 12th on the Ryder Cup list but slumped over the closing stages, dropping three shots in the last four holes to finish joint seventh.

Fowler’s loss was Zach Johnson’s gain as the 2015 British Open champion claimed the final automatic spot.

Reed was delighted with his win but acknowledged his game needed work after he recorded bogeys at the 16th and 18th holes.

“I have worked pretty hard with my coach for the past couple of weeks,” the 26-year-old said in a greenside interview.

“The game shows I’m moving in the right direction but there are some things I need to work on. As the pressure started building I started going back to my old pattern, hit some shots left.”
