Leona Maguire moves into contention at Shoprite Classic

Irish woman is four under par after her opening round in New Jersey

Leona Maguire is two off the lead in a tie for 11th after the first round of the Shoprite LPGA Classic in Galloway, New Jersey after recording five birdies on her way to a four under par round of 67.

Maguire is competing for the first time since her Solheim Cup heroics and she looks to be continuing in the same vein, sitting just two shots off the lead after the first of the three-round tournament.

Starting on the 10th she was level par through her first 10 holes but then put together birdies at the third, fourth, eighth and ninth to move her way up the leaderboard.

Stephanie Meadow also made a decent start with a two under round of 69. The county Antrim native recovered well from a double bogey on her first hole, and finished strongly with four birdies in her final seven holes.

Maguire made her professional debut at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 2018, finishing eight under and in a tie for 15th.
