Carton House golfer Keith Egan produced a nerveless display of ruthless golf to see off home favourite David Brady and secure the West of Ireland Amateur Open Championship on Tuesday at County Sligo.
The 31-year-old Egan, whose mother hails from Strandhill across the bay, held his composure along the closing stretch and finished the match with a cool par on the16th for a 3&2 win.
“I’m delighted, I can’t really express what that means,” said Egan. “Everything is worth it, all of the practice, all of the patience, all of the years coming here, all the miserable weather, it’s all worth it for this.”
Egan put in a dominant display in the morning to beat Clandeboye’s Ross Latimer 3&2, while Brady needed six extra holes to get past Castleknock’s Paul Coughlan.

It proved a good day for Carton House golfers as Brendan Lawlor secured the inaugural ISPS Handa G4D tournament with a battling performance.
The 27-year-old Louth golfer, who was also crowned the first ever G4D Open winner at Woburn last year, held his composure in the closing holes after a difficult back nine to finish the day with a 73 to back up his opening 74 for a three-shot victory over local golfer Alan Gaynor.
