GOWRAN PARK PREVIEW:GLENFINN CAPTAIN can make up for his unfortunate last start by landing the Grade two Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park this afternoon. The Tom Taaffe-trained horse might not have beaten the well-treated Cailin Alainn in last month's Kinloch Brae at Thurles anyway, but his task was made much harder by a last-fence mistake.
Barry Geraghty lost his iron as a result of that error and had to ride a finish with only one stirrup.
Cailin Alainn was getting all the allowances that day and ultimately won snugly but Glenfinn Captain’s supporters are entitled to wonder how much the combination of that error and the subsequent irregular finish took out of their charge.
Cailin Alainn’s stable companion Carthalawn could end up a danger today, along with Watson Lake and the Grand National hope Hear The Echo.
But given normal luck in running Glenfinn Captain can secure victory.
Jazz Messenger finished runner-up to Catch Me in last season’s Grade Two Trial Hurdle but he looks to have a decent chance of going one better this time despite having his first start in exactly a year.
Noel Meade’s focus will also be on the Beginners Chase where Nicanor returns to action after almost three years off.
“He has been off a long time and won’t be 100 per cent wound up. But he is plenty straight enough and has done a lot of work,” Meade said yesterday.
It’s a big ask for Nicanor to win first time up and possibly Clarified can get the better of him.
