Twelve-year-old Alexis Thompson has become the youngest golfer ever to qualify for the United States Women's Open.

Twelve-year-old Alexis Thompson has become the youngest golfer ever to qualify for the United States Women's Open.

Thompson, from Coral Springs, had rounds of 72 and 71 to finish sixth in the qualifier at Heathrow Country Club in her home state Florida.

She is seven months younger than previous record holder Morgan Pressel, whose first US Open appearance in 2001 came on the same Pine Needles course where this year's championship takes place on June 28-July 1.
