AMATEUR GOLF: Martina Gillenbrought a smile to Irish officials as she provided company for Alison Coffey in the third round of the British Women's Open Amateur Championship over the Ashburnham links in West Wales yesterday.

The 20-year-old International from Beaverstown, a student at Kent State University in Ohio, first beat Yorkshire's Katie Dobson by 3 and 2 and then disposed of Rebecca Prout from Surrey by the same score-line.

"Having failed to qualify both times I have played before, I am absolutely delighted to have got this far. I played well today and am very happy," said Gillen.

Gillen now faces Welsh international Anna Highgate (19), who chalked up a 6 and 5 demolition of Scottish champion Heather Stirling.

Coffey, who led the qualifiers on Wednesday, had to pull out all the stops to overcome Sweden's Karen Sjodin on the home green in the morning, but then produced a vintage display to hammer Denmark's Lisa Holm Sorensen by 6 and 5.
