Teddy McCarthy was a notable absentee from the 1990 Cork jubilee team who were presented to the crowd before Sunday’s All-Ireland final - at that stage though he was well on his way back to the rebel county.

The only man to win both hurling and football titles in the same year, McCarthy left Croke Park enraged after a confrontation with Croke Park staff.

The former dual player was unhappy after being sent to three different entrances by staff - subsequently being told to leave the stadium for an hour to calm down after an angry exchange.

The 1989 footballer of the year had already been honoured prior to this year's hurling decider just a fortnight ago, and so he would have been the first player to be honoured on two jubilee teams in one year - but instead he made hay, back to Cork, and Billy Morgan stood in for him.

"There was no explanation so then I got irked, I got annoyed, so I went away then. I went back down the road towards Cork and stopped along the way to watch the game," he told SportsJoe on Monday.

“Seán Kelly and a few more rang me to tell me to come back in, everything had been sorted, but I was past the point of no return at that stage. It was quarter-to-twelve in the morning and they were treating me like I was some bowzy in a nightclub.”
