Lee Keegan and Seamus Callanan named GAA/GPA players of month

Mayo's Lee Keegan and Tipperary's Seamus Callanan have been named the GAA/GPA August players of the month for football and hurling respectively.

Keegan produced an inspired performance from wingback in Mayo’s All-Ireland quarter-final win over Donegal, scoring 1-02 in the Connacht champions’ 2-13 to 0-11 win at Croke Park.

Keegan was also impressive as his side fought back from a seven point deficit to earn a draw against Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final, and attracted controversy when he was punched by Diarmuid Connolly, an incident which led the Dublin man to be suspended for the replay before having the ban controversially lifted.

Meanwhile Callanan has received the award on the back of his display in Tipp’s epic All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Galway.

Full forward Callanan scored a stunning 3-09, 3-04 which came from open play, and picked up the man of the match award despite his side losing 3-16 to 0-26.

On the announcement of the awards GPA Chief Executive Dessie Farrell said: "While Seamus and Lee have had to endure the heartbreak of semi-final defeat, their outstanding individual performances during August have been recognised by their fellow players.

“Once again this year both players have been pivotal in their sides’ progress to the latter stages of the championship - Lee’s performance against Donegal and Seamus’ tour de force against Galway were standout displays this season.”
