Mattie Kenny is to stay with the Dublin hurlers for a further year. Having managed the county to a Leinster final and All-Ireland quarter-final this year, the Galway native has decided to remain in charge for a further season.

The decision was announced on the county website, with the county board expressing themselves “delighted” with the outcome. Kenny, who coached Dublin champions Cuala to two All-Ireland club titles in 2017 and ‘18, outlined his reasons.

“We have a great bunch of guys on the panel, who are highly committed to Dublin hurling and the Dublin senior hurling team, and we are focused on getting better and building to delivering the performances that the Dublin hurling supporters can be proud of.

“It is an exciting time with plenty of younger talent coming through in the county, as seen by our recent Leinster success at under-20 level. We are all looking forward to getting back to work later in the year and preparing for the 2022 campaign.”

Dublin county chair Mick Seavers said: “We are delighted that Mattie has agreed to extend his tenure. We had a very positive year in 2021 at both senior and underage level. We look forward to seeing some of our talented under-20 players progress into the senior ranks under Mattie and his management team in the coming months.”

Meanwhile speculation is mounting that Colm Bonnar will be appointed the new Tipperary hurling manager. A former All-Ireland winner with the county, he has a wealth of coaching experience as a selector with Waterford and Tipperary as well as managing Wexford and Carlow.

He also has huge experience of developing young players as the Sports Officer in Waterford IT where he also coached the college to Fitzgibbon Cup titles.
