GPA asks members to contact county boards about championship reform

After intensive consultation in recent days, the Gaelic Players Association is believed to be asking its membership to make their views on championship reform known to county boards around the country.

The two formats are a provincial model with tweaks to turn each of the four provinces into eight-team competitions (option A) and a league-based championship (option B).

Although numbers have not been released, it’s understood that support amongst players for option B is overwhelming.

It is the GPA position that the status quo should not be considered an option when the GAA meets in special congress in three weeks to deliberate on football championship proposals.

The association is expected to comment publicly on the issue after next week’s meeting of its national executive committee. As things stand it is not clear that either option A or option B are attracting sufficient support to reach the qualified majority threshold of 60 per cent.
