Limerick survive London’s comeback

Limerick survived a nervy ending at Ruislip yesterday to escape with their promotion aspirations still on track.

With the wind at their backs, the Shannonsiders had the better of the first half and John Riordan’s 14th minute goal helped them into a 1-7 to 1-2 lead at the break.

London ended the half on a high thanks to a goal from a Lloyd Colfer penalty. The second half really only came to life in the final 10 minutes when – with Limerick leading by 1-9 to 1-3 – London moved up a gear and began to close the gap.

London kicked five unanswered points – three of them by substitute Eoin O’Neill – to leave the bare minimum between the teams in added time.

But Limerick, who introduced John Galvin late on, held on for a victory that London will argue was facilitated by referee Ray McBrien’s questionable call when he ruled out a late Mark Gottsche point from a ‘45’ – deeming the player to have taken the kick too early.
