Donie Shine latest player to suffer cruciate injury

The list of cruciate ligament injury victims continues with confirmation that star Roscommon forward Donie Shine will miss the rest of the season.

Shine was stretchered off 54 minutes into Sunday's one-point defeat to Mayo in the Connacht football semi-final, and subsequent scans have revealed he has ruptured his posterior cruciate ligament.

Although not quite as series as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), it still means an extended spell of rehabilitation for the Clan Na Gael forward.

“Ruptured posterior cruciate,” Shine tweeted this afternoon. “Not great, but could be worse. Thanks for all the messages.”

This news comes less than 24 hours after Meath midfielder Conor Gillespie also confirmed that he would miss the rest of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament at training over the weekend.

Gillespie had only just recovered from a fractured shin bone, and was set to feature in Sunday's Leinster football quarter-final against Carlow. Meath were already without star forward Eamon Wallace, who also suffered the same injury in March.
