Declan Bonner to stay on as Donegal manager for a further two years

Declan Bonner has been reappointed as manager of the Donegal footballers for a further two-year term. The 1992 All-Ireland winner is serving his second term in charge of the team having also been manager in the late 1990s.

Last Wednesday he presented a report on the 2021 season and expressed his interest in a further term. The position was opened up to competition but none of the clubs nominated another candidate.

According to statement on the county website, on Monday evening, “the county executive recommended Declan for a two-year term to county committee who approved this decision”.

Donegal won the Ulster title in his first two years in 2018 and ’19 but didn’t make it out of the All-Ireland quarter-final round-robins. Last year in the Covid-enforced knock-out championship they lost their title to Cavan and in July were beaten by this year’s All-Ireland finalists Tyrone in the Ulster semi-final.

Now 10 years in the county system, and having won Ulster minor and under-21 titles along the way, Bonner intends to strengthen his backroom team, as the county, which has placed Karl Lacey in charge of its recently formed football academy, pushes ahead with plans for the future.
