GAA ‘left desperately in shock’ after Shane Mulholland death

‘He was a young man in his prime, immersed in our games’

Tributes have been paid to Fermanagh hurler Shane Mulholland who passed away after a car crash on Friday night .

The 27-year-old was involved in a collision between Lisnaskea and Derrylin in Fermanagh where one more adult and two children were taken to hospital but have all since been discharged.

GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail “expressed his condolences on behalf of the wider organisation”.

The Antrim man, based in Fermanagh, hurled with both the county team and for his local Lisbellaw club.

Ó Fearghail continued: “It was with deep regret that we learnt of the tragic passing of Shane early this morning in such shocking circumstances.

“He was a young man in his prime, immersed in our games playing and working to promote them on a daily basis.”

The Gaelic Players Association extended their "sincere sympathy to the wife, daughter, family, friends and colleagues" of Shane who was a GPA Rep for the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Squad "and an outstanding ambassador for his team mates and his sport. Our condolences to Vanessa, Aisling, the extended Mulholland family, the Fermanagh Hurlers and the Lisbellaw club."

Mulholland was employed as a hurling development officer by the Cavan county board and they released a statement this morning mourning the loss of “the talented hurler.

“Cavan GAA are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic and untimely passing of our Hurling Development Administrator Shane Mulholland in a car accident last night.

“Shane took up the position of Cavan GAA HDA in January and was very energetic and passionate in his role and had so many plans. A true gentleman taken before his time.

“As a mark of respect to Shane, today’s Ulster Minor Shield Finals in hurling and football between Cavan and Tyrone were postponed.”

Fermanagh GAA also released a statement telling of a county “left desperately in shock.

“We are all extremely shocked and we extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of Shane.

“Ar Dheis Dé Go Raibh Siad.”
