At the GAA's Central Central Council on Friday evening it was decided to withdraw motion 58 – the so-called Anthony Nash proposal – to restrict the taking of frees or penalties to being struck from the 20-metre line in hurling.

The proposal has become associated with Cork goalkeeper Nash, who in last year’s championship developed the technique of lifting the ball a considerable distance before striking.

The motion had been proposed by the Standing Committee on Playing Rules. Instead Central Council will issue an updated, binding interpretation on the rule.

Cork chair Bob Ryan, who had called earlier this week for the motion to be withdrawn, reacted to the news this evening.

“I’m not really sure as to what situation is but it has been withdrawn now. There are rumblings now there will be some direction going to come from Central Council in the future so we will have to wait and see.

“The show of support we got from all around the hurling world was phenomenal in the last week. People were just outraged at moving this from the game.”
