One last attack for Tyrone, put in the box but they couldn’t get it through the defence. Monaghan have won against the odds, five points back at half-time. Amazing game.

What a second half performance by Monaghan, coming back from five points behind, a dramatic game in Healy Park in Omagh as Monaghan go through to play Derry in the next round. The lead changed hands several times in the last 10 minutes.

50 mins: Monaghan have the ball moved up twice for dissent by Tyrone. McManus scores a free, only one point in it now. What a comeback on the cards with Tyrone yet to score in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Donnelly misses, another wide for Tyrone.

48 mins: Great point by Bannigan, moves around two or three players and puts it over nicely. Monaghan all over Tyrone in the past five minutes. Tyrone go up the pitch but strong defending by Monaghan and Tyrone are penalised for overcarrying.

46 mins: McCurry misses again, Gallagher catches the resulting kickout by Beggan, O’Hanlon is fouled but takes a quick free. Ball comes to McManus in front of the goal, he tries to dummy the keeper Morgan but he stands up strong and saves for a 45. Beggan misses the 45. Disappointing for Monaghan to not score from that passage of play.

Impressive from Tyrone so far, particularly young forward Darragh Canavan, who scored 1-4 in the first half. Some good scores from both teams. Half-time stats show Tyrone dominated the kickouts, pressing up on Monaghan’s keeper Rory Beggan and not giving them many options. Monaghan hung in there, with six points from McManus, but will need to find a way to stop the Tyrone attack in the second half.

38 mins: Fantastic point by Conor Meyler, his second from play today. Tenacious play by both teams and falls to Donnelly who scores a lovely point. Two late points make a big difference ahead of the break. Morgan out of his goal again, again Tyrone foul and point by McManus.

36 mins: Morgan contests the kickout and is well out of his goal. He fails to win it though and Monaghan come up the pitch, a few fouls by Tyrone, McManus breaks through and shoots it goes wide but it goes back for the free. McManus scores to reduce it to four points.

11 mins: GOAL FOR TYRONE! Great catch from Kilpatrick from a kickout leads to a point from Donnelly, who finishes well. Beggan then gives away the kickout and Tyrone work it up beautifully and Canavan scores a goal! Nice finish.

McCarron gets up and McManus puts the ball over from the free for his first point of the day.

There is, of course, a new Championship structure this season, where outside of the provincial titles, both teams will get another go in the All-Ireland series later in the summer regardless. Ulster chief executive Brian McAvoy spoke this week and is not concerned at the questioning of the provincial championship’s relevance in the light of the GAA’s new football structure. Last month the new structure was heavily criticised by Armagh coach Ciarán McKeever, who said that it would fatally undermine the provincial championship.

“People have their own views but provincial championships are important in the current scheme,” according to McAvoy. “If you win, you are a first seed. Now that the All-Ireland is linked to the league, you have the situation where Meath probably have to get to a Leinster final if they are to compete for the Sam Maguire.”

“Provincial championships still have a value,” according to McAvoy. “Many counties can’t realistically aspire to winning an All-Ireland a good few can aspire to winning a provincial title.”

One change to the Monaghan team, Karl O’Connell comes in at centre half back for Dessie Ward. Peter Canavan says Ward is a “massive loss”.

Before today’s game, Malachy Clerkin spoke to Monaghan veteran and great Conor McManus, who will be making his 60th consecutive Championship start in today’s game. Monaghan’s three-time All Star hasn’t missed a championship game since 2007 and feels more success is possible under clubmate Vinny Corey. He’s scored 9-258 in his 64 matches, and still has the ability to change games, as shown by his performance in the final round of the football league.

“Tyrone aren’t going to be thinking this isn’t worth winning if it’s tight with 15 minutes to go and neither are we. It’s probably hard for managers to decide what’s right but in the heat of the game, you’re just going to go for it.”
